Diprolene is used to treat the itching, dryness, redness, crusting, scaling, inflammation and discomfort from various skin conditions.

Diprolene is sometimes prescribed for other uses. Your doctor or pharmacist can give you more information.

Diprolene comes in ointment, cream, lotion and aerosol in various strengths for use on the skin. It is usually applied one to four times daily. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Use Diprolene exactly as directed. Do not use more or less of it or use it more often than prescribed. Do not apply it to other areas of your body. Do not wrap or bandage the treated area unless directed to do so by your doctor.

Wash or soak the affected area thoroughly before applying Diprolene, unless it causes irritation. Apply the ointment or cream sparingly in a thin film. Rub in gently.

To use Diprolene lotion on your scalp, part your hair. Apply a small amount to the affected area and rub it in gently. Protect the area of the scalp from washing and rubbing until the lotion dries. You may wash your hair as usual but not right after applying the Diprolene.

To apply the aerosol form, shake the container well and spray on the affected area, holding the container about 3 to 6 inches away. Spray for about 2 seconds covering an area about the size of your hand. Be careful not to inhale the vapors. Cover your eyes if you are spraying near your face.

Avoid prolonged use on your face, in the genital area, rectal areas, skin creases and armpits unless directed by your doctor.

If you are using Diprolene on your face, keep it out of your eyes.

If you are using Diprolene on a child's diaper area, do not use tightly fitting diapers or plastic pants. Their use may increase side effects.

Do not apply cosmetics or other skin preparations on the treated area without talking with your physician.

If your physician tells you to wrap or bandage the treated area, follow the instructions given here:

  • Soak the affected area in water or wash it well.

  • While the skin is still moist, gently rub Diprolene into the affected areas.

  • Cover the area with plastic food wrap (such as Handi-Wrap or Saran Wrap). The plastic can be held in place with a gauze or an elastic bandage or with adhesive tape on the healthy skin beside the treated area. Instead of using plastic food wrap, you may use plastic gloves for the hands, plastic bags for the feet or a shower cap for the scalp.

  • Carefully seal the edges of the plastic food wrap to make sure it adheres closely to the skin. If the affected area is still moist, you can leave the edges of the plastic food wrap partly unsealed or punctured to allow excess moisture to escape.

  • Leave the plastic food wrap in place as long as instructed to by your doctor. Usually they are left in place for less than 12 hours each day.

  • Cleanse your skin and reapply Diprolene each time a new plastic wrapping is applied.

If the treated area gets worse or if burning, swelling, redness, or oozing of pus develops, call your physician.
