USES

Cleocin (Clindamycin) is an antibiotic which is used to treat acne, infections of the skin, respiratory tract, vagina, pelvis, and abdomen.

Antibiotics will not work for the flu, colds, or other viral infections.

Cleocin (Clindamycin) is sometimes prescribed for other uses. Ask your physician or pharmacist for more information.

HOW TO USE CLEOCIN (CLINDAMYCIN)

Cleocin comes in capsule and liquid form to be taken by mouth; in topical solution, lotion, or gel for skin infections; and in vaginal cream.

Cleocin (Clindamycin) usually is taken every 6 hours for pelvis, respiratory, or abdomen infections or applied twice daily for acne.

Shake the oral liquid well before each use to mix the medication evenly. For both capsule and oral liquid, drink a full glass of water after each dose.

For acne, it may take up to 12 weeks for the full effect of Cleocin (Clindamycin) to be seen. Shake the topical lotion well before each use. Apply in a thin film after thoroughly washing and drying the skin. Avoid getting Cleocin in your eyes, mouth or on broken skin. If you do, wash with plenty of water.

Carefully follow the directions on your prescription label. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you don't understand. Take Cleocin (Clindamycin) exactly as directed. Do not take more or less or take more often than prescribed by your doctor.

For vaginal infections, Cleocin (Clindamycin) is used once a day, at bedtime, for 7 days. Cleocin (Clindamycin) cream for the vagina comes with a special applicator. Apply the dose when you lie down to go to bed. Cleocin works best if you do not get up again after applying except to wash your hands and the applicator. Read the directions which accompany the medication and follow these steps:

• Fill the special applicator that comes with the cream to the level which is indicated.
• Lie down on your back with knees drawn upward and spread apart.
• Gently insert the applicator into your vagina. Push the plunger to release the medicine.
• Withdraw applicator and wash with soap and warm water.
• Wash hands promptly to avoid spreading the infection.

You may want to wear a sanitary napkin while using the vaginal cream to protect your clothing from stains. Do not use a tampon. It will absorb the medication. Do not use a douche unless your doctor tells you to do so. Continue using Cleocin (Clindamycin) vaginal cream even if you get your period during treatment.

PRECAUTIONS

Before taking Cleocin (Clindamycin):

• Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you have an allergy to:

  • tartrazine (a yellow dye in some drugs and processed foods)
  • any other drugs.

CLEOCIN and BREAST FEEDING

Tell your doctor if you are breast feeding.

CLEOCIN MISSED DOSES

Take your missed Cleocin dose as soon as you remember it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and take any remaining doses for that day at evenly spaced intervals. Do not double your dose to make up for a missed one. If you miss a topical dose, do not apply that dose.

CLEOCIN SIDE EFFECTS

Cleocin side effects are not common, but they can occur. Tell your medical care provider if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

• diarrhea
• gas
• vomiting
• upset stomach

While using Cleocin vaginally or on your skin, tell your medical care provider if any these side effects are severe or do not go away:

• itching
• burning
• dry skin
• redness
• irritation
• peeling
• oiliness

Stop taking Cleocin and call your medical care provider immediately If you experience the following side effect or any of those listed in the IMPORTANT WARNING section above:

• skin rash

STORAGE

Keep Cleocin in its original container, tightly closed and out of reach of children. Store at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture Do not in the bathroom. Throw away any Cleocin that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.

CLEOCIN OVERDOSE

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center (1-800-222-1222). If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services (911).

NOTES

Do not let anyone else take your Cleocin medication. Your prescription is probably not refillable. If you still have symptoms of infection after you finish the Cleocin (Clindamycin), call your medical care provider.
