Follow the directions on the prescription label. Some patients take Fosamax every day. Other patients may only take a dose of Fosamax once a week. If you take Fosamax only once a week, take the medicine on the same day every week.

FOSAMAX PRECAUTIONS

Before taking Fosamax, your doctor needs to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • unusual or allergic reaction to Fosamax, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • kidney disease
  • stomach, intestinal, or esophageal problems, like acid-reflux or GERD
  • low level of blood calcium
  • vitamin D deficiency
  • problems swallowing

Visit your doctor for regular checks on your progress.

If you have Paget's disease it may be some time before you see any benefit from Fosamax.

Do not stop taking Fosamax except on your doctor's advice.

Fosamax can cause low blood levels of phosphorus and calcium but this is usually not a serious problems. Your doctor may order regular blood tests to check for these problems.

FOSAMAX and PREGNANCY

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.

FOSAMAX and BREAST FEEDING

Tell your doctor if you are breast feeding.

FOSAMAX SIDE EFFECTS

Report these Fosamax side effects to your doctor as soon as possible:

More common:

  • heartburn
  • pain or difficulty swallowing
  • stomach pain

Rare or uncommon:

  • allergic reactions such as hives, swelling of the face, lips or tongue
  • black or tarry stools
  • swelling of the lips, arms, legs, face, tongue, or throat
  • skin rash, itching (hives)
  • vomiting

These Fosamax side effects usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):

  • bone, muscle or joint pain
  • changes in taste
  • diarrhea or constipation
  • headache
  • nausea
  • rash, which may worsen with prolonged exposure to sunlight
  • stomach gas or fullness

FOSAMAX DRUG INTERACTIONS

  • aluminum hydroxide
  • antacids
  • aspirin
  • anti-inflammatory drugs like naproxen, ibuprofen, and others
  • calcium supplements
  • magnesium supplements
  • iron supplements
  • vitamins with minerals

FOSAMAX OVERDOSE

If overdose is suspected, immediately call the poison control center at (1-800-222-1222). Or call emergency services at (911).

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • agitation
  • restlessness
  • fever
  • fast breathing
  • chest pain
  • unusually fast or slow heart beat
  • dizziness
  • confusion
  • delusions
  • hallucinations
  • panic
  • paranoid
  • drowsiness
  • convulsions
  • headache
  • stomach pain
  • nausea/vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • paleness or flushing
  • sweating
  • muscle weakness
  • large pupils
  • unconsciousness

IMPORTANT NOTES

It is important to take Fosamax with a full glass of only water (6-8 ounces). Do not take with coffee, orange juice or other fluids. These may decrease the absorption of Fosamax.

Do not take Fosamax with food. Wait at least 30 minutes or longer after taking Fosamax before you drink, eat or take other medicines.

Because Fosamax may irritate your throat, remain sitting or stand upright for at least 30 minutes after taking Fosamax. Do not lie down.

Make sure you get enough calcium and vitamin D in your diet while you are taking Fosamax, unless directed otherwise by your doctor. Discuss your dietary needs with your doctor or nutritionist.

MISSED DOSE

If you take a daily dose of Fosamax and miss a dose, do not take it later in the day. The next morning, continue your normal schedule starting, before you have eaten. Do not take double or extra doses.

STORAGE

Store Fosamax at room temperature between 15-30 degrees C (59-86 degrees F). Discard any unused medicine after the expiration date.
