Prochlorperazine is used to help treat nausea and vomiting which is caused by surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and other conditions. It is also used to treat symptoms of psychosis such as hallucinations and hostility.

Prochlorperazine is available as an oral liquid, tablet, extended-release (long-acting) capsule, and rectal suppository.

Tablets are usually taken 3 - 4 times a day. Extended-release capsules are usually taken 1 - 2 times a day.

Liquid and rectal suppository are taken as directed by your doctor.

Carefully read and follow the directions on your prescription label, Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take prochlorperazine exactly as directed. Do not take it more often or take more or less of it than prescribed by your doctor.

Prochlorperazine is not habit-forming, however, do not stop taking it abruptly, especially if you have been taking it for a long time. Your doctor will probably instruct you to decrease your dose gradually.

Extended-release capsules: Do not open. Swallow them whole.

Liquid: Can cause irritation. Do not allow it to touch your skin.

Rectal suppository. Follow these steps:

  • To insert properly, the suppository needs to be firm. If it feels soft, hold it under cold, running water for one minute. Remove the wrapper.

  • Dip the tip of the suppository in water.

  • Lie down on your left side then raise your right knee to your chest. (If you are left-handed, lie on your right side and raise your left knee.)

  • Using a finger, insert the suppository into your rectum. For children, insert about 1/2 to 1 inch. In adults, insert 1 inch. Hold it in place for a few moments.

  • Stand up after 15 minutes or so. Wash your hands thoroughly. You can resume your normal activities.
