ESTRADIOL WARNING

Estradiol has been reported to increase the chance of endometrial (womb) cancer in women who have been through menopause. The risk appears to depend on how long estradiol is used and the amount of estrogen per dose. If you use this drug for an extended period, you should be evaluated by your doctor at least every 6 months. If you experience abnormal vaginal bleeding, notify your doctor immediately. Estradiol is not effective in preventing or treating a tendency to have miscarriages (natural habitual abortion) nor the threat of having a miscarriage. Estradiol must not be used during pregnancy because it may result in birth defects or cancer later in the child's life. If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, consult your doctor immediately.

ESTRADIOL USES

Estradiol is a hormone which is given to women who no longer produce the proper amount. It is used to reduce menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, for brittle bones (osteoporosis), and to treat certain cancers in both men and women.

HOW TO USE ESTRADIOL

Estradiol may be taken with food or immediately after a meal to prevent stomach upset. Take it as prescribed. Carefully follow the dosing schedule. Be sure to ask your doctor if you have any questions.

ESTRADIOL SIDE EFFECTS

As your body adjusts to to the medication, you may experience these estradiol side effects. They should go away as your body adjusts. Contact your doctor if they persist:

bloating
dizziness
headache
lightheadedness
nausea
stomach upset

Notify your doctor if you experience any of these estradiol side affects:

calf pain
chest pain
changes in vaginal bleeding
- spotting
- breakthrough bleeding

severe depression
shortness of breath
skin rash

ESTRADIOL PRECAUTIONS

Before you take estradiol, tell your doctor your entire medical history, including:

If you are planning surgery, tell the doctor that you take estradiol.

Depending on strength, estradiol may cause a patchy, darkening of the skin on your face (melasma). Higher dosages are more likely to cause melasma. Sunlight may intensify this darkening effect. You may need to avoid prolonged exposure to sun and sunlamps. Consult your medical care provider regarding use of sunscreens and protective clothing.

Cigarette smoking can increase the chance of developing blood clots while taking estradiol (especially in women past the age of 35).

ESTRADIOL and PREGNANCY

Do not use estradiol during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, immediately inform your doctor.

ESTRADIOL and BREAST FEEDING

Estradiol may be excreted into breast milk. Its use is not recommended while breastfeeding. Consult your physician before breastfeeding.

ESTRADIOL DRUG INTERACTIONS

Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medications you may use, especially:

barbiturates (e.g., phenobarbital)
corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone)
hydantoins (e.g., phenytoin)

Estradiol can affect the results of certain lab tests. Make sure laboratory personnel and your doctor know you use this drug. Do not start or stop estradiol or any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

ESTRADIOL OVERDOSE

If overdose is suspected, immediately call the poison control center at (1-800-222-1222). Or call emergency services at (911).

Symptoms of an overdose may include:

nausea
vomiting
stoppage of periods

NOTES

Do not share this medication or any other with others.

MISSED DOSE

If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

STORAGE

Store estradiol at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom.
