Generic ZOVIRAX: Acyclovir

USES

Zovirax (acyclovir) is used to treat:

• chickenpox
• herpes zoster (shingles)
• herpes infections of the lip, skin, and genitals

Topical Zovirax (acyclovir) does not cure herpes nor prevent the recurrence of sores but may decrease the pain and itching if it is applied when the earliest symptoms first appear.

Oral acyclovir decreases the severity and frequency of recurrent sores. Because if possible acyclovir side effects, it is used only by people with severe herpes infections.

Zovirax is sometimes prescribed for other uses. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

HOW TO USE ZOVIRAX

Acyclovir comes as

• ointment for use on the skin
• capsule, tablet, and liquid to take by mouth

Take acyclovir exactly as directed. Do not take it more often or take more or less of it than prescribed by your doctor.

ZOVIRAX and PREGNANCY

MISSED DOSES

If it is close to the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of the oral medication or use twice as much of the ointment to make up for a missed one.

Otherwise, follow these instructions:

TABLETS, CAPSULES, OR LIQUID:

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. Then take any remaining doses for that day at evenly spaced intervals.

OINTMENT

Apply the ointment as soon as you remember. Apply further doses at your regular interval (e.g., every 3 hours) for the rest of that day.

ZOVIRAX SIDE EFFECTS

Although Zovirax side effects (acyclovir side effects) are not common, they can occur. Call your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

• burning, stinging, itching, or rash when ointment is applied
• diarrhea or loose stools
• headache
• upset stomach
• vomiting

Call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:

• blood in the urine
• confusion
• fever
• severe itching
• severe rash
• stomach pain
• yellow skin or eyes

ZOVIRAX OCERDOSE

In case of A Zovirax overdose call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is not breathing or has collapsed, call local emergency services at 911.

OTHER INFORMATION

If you can see genital herpes lesions, do not have sexual intercourse. However, be aware that genital herpes can be spread even when there are no symptoms.

Your doctor will order lab tests to check your response to acyclovir. Keep all doctor and laboratory appointments.

Do not let anyone else take your acyclovir medication.

STORAGE
