Zyloprim (Allopurinol) is used to treat kidney stones, gout, and high levels of uric acid in the body caused by some cancer medications. Zyloprim is in a class of medications called xanthine oxidase inhibitors. It works by reducing the production of uric acid in the body. Gout attacks or kidney stones may be caused by high levels of uric acid. Zyloprim is used to prevent gout attacks. It is not used to treat them once they occur.

Zyloprim tablets are usually taken once or twice a day after a meal. To make it easier to remember, take Zyloprim around the same time each day.

Read and follow the directions on your prescription label carefully. Ask your pharmacist or doctor to explain any part you do not understand.

Take Zyloprim exactly as prescribed. Do not take it more often or take more or less of it than prescribed by your doctor.

Probably your doctor will start you on a low dose of Zyloprim and gradually increase the dose, not more than once a week.

It may be several months or longer before you feel the full benefit of Zyloprim. Zyloprim may actually increase the number of gout attacks during the first few months that you take it. It should eventually prevent attacks. Your doctor may prescribe colchicine or another medication to prevent gout attacks for the first few months you take Zyloprim. Continue to take Zyloprim even if you feel better. Do not stop taking Zyloprim without discussing it with your doctor.

Zyloprim is also used to treat certain infections, seizures, and pain caused by pancreas disease. It is also used to improve survival chances after bypass surgery, prevent rejection of kidney transplants, and reduce ulcer relapses.

Before taking Zyloprim:

  • Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Zyloprim or any other medications.

    • amoxicillin (Amoxil, Trimox)
    • ampicillin (Principen, Polycillin)
    • anticoagulants (blood thinners) such as warfarin (Coumadin)
    • chemotherapy drugs such as mercaptopurine (Purinethol) and cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan)
    • chlorpropamide (Diabinese)
    • diuretics (water pills)
    • medications that suppress the immune system such as cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune) and azathioprine (Imuran)
    • other medications for gout such as sulfinpyrazone (Anturane) and probenecid (Benemid)
    • tolbutamide (Orinase)

Your doctor may need to adjust the dosage of your medications or monitor you carefully for side effects.

Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had liver disease, kidney disease or heart failure.

Zyloprim may make you drowsy. Do not operate machinery or drive a car or until you know how this medication affects you.

Alcohol may decrease the effectiveness of Zyloprim. Discuss with your doctor the safe use of alcoholic beverages while you are taking Zyloprim.
