GENERIC NAME: Hyoscyamine


Levsin medication is used to control the symptoms that accompany gastrointestinal (GI) tract disorders. It does not cure the disease. It decreases the motion of the stomach and intestines. It also decreases the secretion of stomach fluids, such as stomach acid.

Levsin is also used to threat the following:

The liquid and tablets are usually taken 3 or 4 times a day. The extended-release capsules are usually taken 2 times a day.

Extended-release capsules: Do not chew, crush or divide.

Injections must be given by a qualified health care professional.

Before taking Levsin,

  • tell your doctor and pharmacist
    • about any allergies you have to Levsin or any other drugs
    • if you have or have ever had
      • glaucoma
      • heart, lung, liver, or kidney disease
      • urinary tract or intestinal obstruction
      • enlarged prostate
      • ulcerative colitis
      • myasthenia gravis
    • about any medications (prescription and non-prescription) you are taking, especially:
      • Anafranil (clomipramine)
      • Compazine (prochlorperazine)
      • Elavil (amitriptyline)
      • Haldol (haloperidol)
      • medications containing belladonna (Donnatal)
      • Mellaril (thioridazine)
      • Nardil (phenelzine)
      • Norpramin (desipramine)
      • Pamelor (nortriptyline)
      • Parnate (tranylcypromine)
      • Phenergan (promethazine)
      • Prolixin (fluphenazine)
      • Serentil (mesoridazine)
      • Sinequan (doxepin)
      • Sparine (promazine)
      • Stelazine (trifluoperazine)
      • Surmontil (trimipramine)
      • Symadine, Symmetrel (amantadine)
      • Temaril (trimeprazine)
      • Thorazine (chlorpromazine)
      • Tofranil (imipramine)
      • Trilafon (perphenazine)
      • Vesprin (triflupromazine)
      • Vivactil (protriptyline)
      • vitamins or herbal supplements
    • if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant (If you become pregnant while taking Levsin, call your doctor.)
    • if you are breast-feeding
    • if you are having surgery, including dental surgery (Tell your dentist, also)

Antacids may interfere with Levsin, and make it less effective. Take Levsin 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking antacids.

Levsin may cause drowsiness. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you determine how Levsin affects you.

Alcohol can increase the drowsiness caused by Levsin.


Levsin is often taken 30-60 minutes before meals. Ask your doctor or pharmacists about when you should take your doses.


Take the missed Levsin dose as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for one you missed.


Tell your doctor if any of these side affects are severe or do not go away:

  • blurred vision
  • constipation
  • difficulty urinating
  • dizziness or lightheadedness
  • drowsiness
  • dry mouth
  • flushing (feeling of warmth)
  • headache
  • increased sensitivity to light

If you experience any of the following serious side effects, call your doctor immediately:

  • diarrhea
  • fast or irregular heartbeat
  • eye pain
  • skin rash


Keep this Levsin in its original container, tightly closed and out of reach of children. Store at room temperature. Avoid excess heat and moisture. (Do not store in the bathroom).

Discard any medicine that is beyond its expiration date or no longer needed. Ask your pharmacist about proper disposal.


In case of a Levsin overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is not breathing or has collapsed, call your local emergency services at 911.


Always keep your appointments with your doctor and the laboratory.

Do not let give your Levsin medication to anyone else.
