ZOCOR DRUG INFORMATION, ABOUT ZOCOR
COMMON BRAND NAME: ZOCOR®
GENERIC NAME: Simvastatin
WHAT IS ZOCOR?
Atorvastatin, fluvastatin, pravastatin, cerivastatin #, lovastatin, and simvastatin are used to lower cholesterol levels and other fats levels in the blood, which may help prevent medical problems caused by blood vessels clogged with cholesterol.
These medicines belong to the group called 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors. They work by blocking an enzyme which the body needs to produce cholesterol, thereby, less cholesterol is made.
HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors are available only with a doctor's prescription. They are available in the following dosage forms:
Before using HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, the following risk should be discussed with your doctor:
Advise your doctor if you have ever had an allergic or unusual reaction to HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. Also tell your doctor if you are allergic to any other substances, such as foods, dyes or preservatives.
As the first step in lowering your cholesterol, before prescribing medication, your doctor will probably prescribe a diet for you. This diet will be lower in total fat, especially saturated fat, and dietary cholesterol. Often people are able to control their condition if they carefully follow their doctor's orders for proper diet and exercise. Medication is only prescribed when additional help is needed and is only effective when diet and exercise regimens are properly followed.
Also, these drugs are less effective if you are greatly overweight. It may be necessary for you to go on a reducing diet. But check with your doctor before going on any kind of diet.
Studies on HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors have only been done in adult patients. There is no specific information comparing their use in children with use in other age groups. However, lovastatin, atorvastatin, and simvastatin (Zocor) have been used in a limited number of children under the age of 18. Early results seem to show that these medicines may be effective in children. However, their long-term safety has not been studied.
HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors have been tested in a limited number of patients 65 years of age or older. They have not been shown to cause different side effects or problems in older adults than they do in younger adults.
ZOCOR and PREGNANCY
Do not use Zocor (Simvastatin) or other HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. These drugs block the formation of cholesterol, which is necessary for the baby to develop properly.
Zocor (Simvastatin) and other HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors may cause birth defects or other problems in the baby. Be sure you use an effective form of birth control if you use these medicines. Call your doctor immediately if you think you have become pregnant while using this drug.
ZOCOR and BREAST FEEDING
Zocor (Simvastatin) or other HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors are not recommended for use during breast-feeding. They may cause unwanted effects in a nursing baby.
