Allegra allergy relief medication and decongestant is used to for allergy symptoms such as stuffy nose, itchy red eyes and throat irritation.


Usually taken twice daily.

Take Allegra D tablets orally on an empty stomach. Take one hour before or two hours after meals as directed.

Swallow the medicine whole. Do not crush or chew the tablet.

The effectiveness of Allegra D may be decreased if taken with a high fat meal.

Do not take antacids which contain magnesium and aluminum within two hours of taking this medication.

Take only as directed. Do not take more than prescribed.

Do not take this product less than 14 days after stopping an MAO Inhibitor (see Drug Interactions below).


If any of these Allegra-D side effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly:

  • nausea
  • upset stomach
  • symptoms of a cold
  • headache
  • trouble sleeping

These Allegra side effects are unlikely but if they occur, report promptly:

  • dizziness
  • mental/mood changes
  • fast heartbeat
  • fever

These Allegra-D side effects are highly unlikely, but they are very serious. Report them to you doctor immediately:

  • fainting
  • irregular heartbeat

Drowsiness is very uncommon under normal circumstances at usual doses, but if it does occur, it may effect the ability to perform tasks requiring alertness like driving.

Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you notice other effects not listed above.


Tell your physician your medical history, including:

  • allergies
  • heart disease
  • severe high blood pressure
  • kidney/urinary problems
  • thyroid problems (hyperthyroid)
  • enlarged prostate
  • diabetes
  • glaucoma (narrow angle)

Limit alcohol intake, as it may worsen Allegra D's side effects.

In the elderly, caution is advised since this group can be more sensitive to side effects.

During pregnancy, Allegra D should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your physician.


The pseudoephedrine in Allegra D is excreted into breast milk. Consult your physician before breast-feeding.


Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, particularly:

  • MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, linezolid, moclobemide, selegiline, phenelzine, procarbazine, tranylcypromine)
  • any adrenaline-like drug
  • digoxin
  • some blood pressure drugs (e.g., mecamylamine, methyldopa, reserpine, prazosin)

Report to your doctor any other drugs which affect heart rhythm (QTc prolongation), such as:

  • procainamide
  • dofetilide
  • sparfloxacin
  • pimozide
  • quinidine
  • sotalol
  • water pills (diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide or furosemide)

Check the labels carefully on all nonprescription medications like cold-and-cough medicines which contain antihistamines and decongestants. Consult your pharmacist.

If you will be having any allergy testing, do not take Allegra D for several days before the tests since results can be affected.

Do not start or stop any medicine without consulting your doctor or pharmacist.


If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center (1-800-222-1222) or emergency medical service (911) immediately.Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • irregular or unusually fast or slow heartbeat
  • hallucinations
  • confusion
  • unusual excitement or nervousness
  • seizures
  • rapid breathing


Do not share this medication with others.


If you miss a dose, take that dose as soon as you remember.

However, if it is near the time of the next dose, skip the dose you missed. Resume your usual schedule.

Do not try to catch up by doubling the dose.


Store at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C). Avoid sunlight and excessive moisture.

Do not store in the bathroom.
